RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan women's soccer team battled Stony Brook (5-2-1) through 85 scoreless minutes before senior midfielder Sa'sha Kershaw came up with the decisive goal as the Jaspers fell 1-0 Friday on Long Island. Freshman goalkeeper Kristen Skonieczny made a career-high eight saves, playing the final 45 minutes in Manhattan's (3-4) setback to the Seawolves.
Stony Brook put the pressure on the Jaspers who were coming off one day of rest since earning a thrilling overtime victory against Wagner on Wednesday in Riverdale. The Seawolves owned a 30-4 shot advantage and took 12 corner kicks to Manhattan's four.
Senior goalkeeper Kara Davis helped anchor a defensive unit that held Stony Brook scoreless in the first 45 minutes. It was Davis' fourth straight scoreless half as she has not allowed a goal since September 2. She made one save facing nine shots and lowered her goals against average to 0.60, which ranks among the national leaders.
Davis turned it over to Skonieczny in the second half where she was tested with 21 shot attempts by the Seawolves. Stony Brook finally broke through the Jaspers' stellar goalkeeping efforts with 85:59 on the clock. Stony Brook freshman forward Raven Edwards found Kershaw after a deflection in the box and she finished from three yards out.
Stony Brook junior goalie Ashley Castanio made two saves to record her third shutout of the season. Jaspers' freshman back Colleen Kavanagh fired two of Manhattan's four shots, placing both on goal.
Manhattan has a week to regroup before the Jaspers embark on a four-game home series. The Jaspers host Holy Cross next Saturday at 4 p.m. Then on Sept. 29 Manhattan opens MAAC play at Gaelic Park against Saint Peter's at 7 p.m.
