RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan women's soccer team used goals from freshmen forwards Emily Ude and Tiffanie McIntosh to run away with its first victory of the year, winning 2-0 at Delaware State (0-1) Sunday. Jaspers' senior goalkeeper Kara Davis secured her 11th career shutout posting two saves in the triumph.
Manhattan (1-1) got on the scoreboard in the 27th minute when Ude finished from five yards out, marking the first goal of her collegiate career. Jaspers' senior forward Allison Pfeiffer notched the assist on the play.
The Jaspers' defensive unit, which was anchored by junior Shannon Barry and freshman Taylor Salkowsky, helped preserve the edge as Manhattan carried the one goal lead into intermission. Barry and Salkowsky each played all 90 minutes in their second straight starts.
McIntosh gave Manhattan an extra cushion in the 75th minute with her first collegiate goal. McIntosh was set up by sophomore Shannon Garrity and blasted one past Delaware State goalkeeper Katelyn Koslosky from 10 yards out. It marked the first assist of Garrity's career in Riverdale.
Davis only had to face five shots from Delaware State with both of her saves coming on attempts from Hornets' midfielder Kelsey Gibson. The second save came in the 86th minute to ensure the shutout.
Ude led Manhattan with four shots, all on goal, in 51 minutes of action. The Jaspers tested Koslosky with 11 shots as she came up with five saves on the afternoon.
Manhattan looks to carry the momentum into its next match when the Jaspers travel to Sacred Heart on Sunday. Kick off is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Fairfield, Conn.
