RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Junior midfielder Tyler Jarvis led the Jaspers with three goals, but Manhattan (5-7, 1-3 MAAC) could not hold on to a two goal halftime advantage falling to Marist 12-8 on Saturday in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Jaspers' sophomore goalkeeper Rich Akapnitis recorded a game-high eight saves in Manhattan's second straight conference setback.
The Jaspers got on the scoreboard 13 seconds into the contest when sophomore attackman Ryan Payton tallied an unassisted goal to put Manhattan on top. Marist answered back with 9:56 on the clock as Red Foxes' midfielder Drew Nesmith posted his first of two goals in the contest.
Marist rallied for the next two goals to open a 3-1 advantage. Brett Bernardo finished on a feed from Connor Rice at the 7:39 mark, and then Red Foxes' attackman Jack Doherty scored the first goal of a game-high four goal performance to give Marist a two goal edge.
Payton assisted Jaspers' sophomore midfielder Taylor Bethea's goal at 2:01 in the first quarter. Jarvis then locked the ballgame at 3-3 with an unassisted goal with nine seconds remaining in the period as Manhattan carried momentum into the second quarter.
Jaspers' freshman midfielder Kevin Cox tallied the first goal of his two goal performance at 12:58 in the second half. The Jaspers defense locked Marist down holding the Red Foxes scoreless in the period, which allowed sophomore midfielder Mike Casson to send Manhattan into intermission with a 5-3 edge after his goal with 3:59 remaining in the half.
Marist (6-4, 3-1 MAAC) rallied for the first six goals of the second half to gain a 9-5 advantage as the Red Foxes would not relinquish their lead. Rice scored the first goal of the third quarter, and then he assisted a goal from Evan Guarini that tied the game at 5-5 with 11:57 remaining in the period. Freshman midfielder Mike Begley gave Marist the go ahead goal with 5:22 left in the quarter putting the Red Foxes on top 6-5.
The Red Foxes received goals from Rice, Connor and Nesmith in the first 3:13 of the fourth quarter to gain a four goal advantage. Manhattan put up three more goals with Cox scoring the first and Jarvis recording the next two, but each time the Jaspers scored Doherty answered with a goal of his own.
Sophomore goalkeeper Craig Goodermote registered seven saves to pick up the win for Marist. Four of his seven saves came in the second half.
Manhattan looks to bounce back next Saturday when the Jaspers travel to Jacksonville for their final MAAC road game of the season. The Jaspers will host Siena for its regular-season finale on April 28th at 7 p.m. at Gaelic Park.
