RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan could not generate much offense against the Seton Hall pitching staff as the Jaspers dropped a 3-0 decision on Wednesday at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, N.J. Pirates' senior starter Henry Warner yielded only two hits over four innings of work to help snap Manhattan's (1-8) three game win streak against Seton Hall (5-7).
Warner struck out three batters to earn his first victory of the season. The Jaspers five man pitching rotation consisted of four freshmen and a sophomore. Freshman left-hander Nick Girardi got Manhattan through the second inning allowing only one hit, before turning the ball over to classmate Michael Scarinci. Scarinci also gave up just two hits working the next two innings, but a sacrifice fly in the third inning by Pirates junior Mike Genovese put the reigning Big East champs on the scoreboard first.
Trailing by one run, the Jaspers could not build momentum in the sixth inning after Nick Camastro's lead off single as Seton Hall sophomore reliever Brian Gilbert bounced back to get the next three outs. Sophomore shortstop Yoandry Galan laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Camastro to second, and then junior catcher Ramon Ortega grounded out to second base and Andrew Gorecki went down swinging to end the frame.
Seton Hall tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth inning on junior Giuseppe Papaccio's RBI single. The Pirates went on top 3-0 in the eighth inning with freshman catcher Tyler Boyd's RBI grounder. Seton Hall junior reliever Ryan Harvey got the last three outs of the ballgame to preserve his second save of the season.
Manhattan continues its season opening 16-game road series as the Jaspers travel to North Carolina this weekend for a three game set at High Point. The series begins on Friday at 4 p.m.
