RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Jaspers men's lacrosse team dropped to 1-3 on the season after an 11-0 loss at #2 Johns Hopkins on Tuesday afternoon at Homewood Field. The game was scoreless through the first ten minutes before the Blue Jays scored five times in the final 4:25 of the first quarter to take a 5-0 advantage.
Manhattan would struggle to find an offensive flow as the Jaspers took a total of 14 shots and won just four of 15 face offs. Freshman Brian Lenskold was 4-13 in his battles.
Hopkins' John Greeley scored three times in the contest while adding another assist to lead all players with four total points. The Blue Jays (5-0) scored twice in the second period and led 7-0 at halftime before tacking on four more in the third. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter of the contest.
The Jaspers were outshot 40-14 in the game while turning the ball over 21 times and forcing 13 of their own. Manhattan was 15-21 in clear attempts while Johns Hopkins as 18-23 and picked up 25 ground balls compared to 21 by the Jaspers. They were also 1-5 on the extra man opportunity with Manhattan going 0-3 on the EMO.
Sophomore goalkeeper Rich Akapnitis made 15 saves in the loss while Pierce Basset earned the win making seven saves in his three quarters of action.
Manhattan will continues their three game road stretch when they travel to Stamford, Conn. to take on Sacred Heart at 1:00 p.m. before traveling to Chamblee, Ga., and Mercer on Tue., March 13. This afternoon's game at Johns Hopkins was tape delayed and will be aired on ESPNU on Wed., March 7 at 7 p.m.
