RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan scored the last six runs of the game in the final three innings as the Jaspers rallied to a 7-3 victory over Marist (7-11, 2-1 MAAC) on Sunday in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The Jaspers four-run eighth inning, that included a three run homer from junior third baseman Kyle Murphy, helped propel Manhattan (4-16, 1-2 MAAC) to its first conference win of the year.
Jaspers' freshman Michael Scarinci pitched five dominant innings out of the bullpen to earn his first career victory. The right-hander from Nanuet, N.Y. allowed only two hits, walked just one batter and did not yield an earned run in the triumph.
Manhattan touched up Red Foxes' starter Brett Houseal for the first of his four earned runs in the third inning after a lead off double from sophomore shortstop Yoandry Galan and RBI infield ground out by junior designated hitter Nick Camastro. Galan led the Manhattan offense batting 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Marist answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs coming from a RBI single from freshman second baseman Alec Petrone and a RBI double from right fielder Jake Berry. The Red Foxes took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning after junior first baseman Mike Orefice's RBI double down the left field line.
Junior catcher Ramon Ortega's lead off single in the seventh inning helped get one run back for the Jaspers. Manhattan sophomore right fielder Andrew Gorecki drove him in with a double to center field to pull the Jaspers within 3-2.
Manhattan scored four runs on three hits in the eighth inning to capture a 6-3 advantage. Galan's lead off single got the Jaspers going as he later scored the first run of the frame on Ortega's sacrifice fly. Then Murphy lit up Red Foxes' closer Jake Rifkin for a three run bomb that exited left field to put Manhattan in control.
The Jaspers tacked on their seventh run after three straight singles off Rifkin at the beginning of the ninth inning. Freshman left fielder Joe McClennan and senior first baseman Matt Troisi set the table with base hits for Galan's RBI single.
Camastro and Ortega each posted two hits in the ballgame for the Jaspers. Houseal was credited the loss for Marist as he pitched 7 1/3 innings and allowed eight hits.
Manhattan returns to action on Tuesday when the Jaspers visit Fairleigh Dickinson at 3:30 p.m. The Jaspers will host New York Institute of Technology on Wednesday at Van Cortlandt Park at 3:30 p.m.
