RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan senior starter Mike Giordano struck out eight batters in a seven inning affair, but the Jaspers could not generate run support falling 2-0 at West Virginia in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. The Jaspers were limited to only two hits with Mountaineers' starter Marshall Thompson picking up the win after pitching six scoreless innings. He turned the ball over to Ryan Tezak who recorded the final three outs for his third save of the season.
West Virginia (9-10) scored both of its runs in the bottom of the second inning. Mountaineers' red-shirt sophomore Matt Frazer got the rally going with a lead off single and he advanced to second base on a throwing error. Ryan McBroom pushed Frazer to third base on a sacrifice bunt that he beat out, and then junior outfielder Chris Rasky's infielder grounder got him across the plate for the first run of the game. Nate Antone drove in the second run in the next at bat with a double to right-center field which sent McBroom in to score.
The Jaspers put base runners in scoring position in the last three innings, but could not deliver the hit to drive in a run. In the fifth and seventh innings freshman left fielder Aidan O'Leary worked lead off walks, although he was stranded on third base in both frames. Manhattan (1-13) had runners on first and second base in the sixth inning after junior catcher Ramon Ortega delivered a one out single, before back-to-back ground outs ended the threat.
Manhattan and West Virginia play game two of the doubleheader at 4 p.m. and will wrap up the four game weekend series on Sunday at 12 p.m. in Morgantown, W. Va.
