WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - On Friday afternoon, the Manhattan College women's basketball team got a sneak peak at one of its future Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rivals, as the Jaspers concluded non-conference play with a matchup at soon-to-be MAAC member Monmouth. Despite a game-high 18 points from Monica Roeder (Marlton, N.J.), Manhattan (3-8) ended up on the short end of a 58-43 decision against the Hawks (3-7) at the Multipurpose Activity Center.
Monmouth quickly jumped out to a 16-7 lead before consecutive three-pointers by Roeder and Ashley Stec (Cazenovia, N.Y.) cut the Jaspers' deficit to three, 16-13, with 6:26 left in the first half. The Hawks responded with a 6-2 rally to bring their advantage back to seven points at 22-15, but Stec drained another trey to make it 22-18 at the 1:02 mark. Monmouth then got two free throws from Carly Thibault to take a 24-18 lead into the locker room.
After a Tibault four-point play extended the Hawks' advantage to 10 points early in the second half, Roeder and Nicole Isaacs (Fair Haven, N.J.) hit a pair of treys to once again pull Manhattan within six, 30-24. However, the Hawks scored 11 of the next 13 points, opening up a 41-26 cushion on a three-pointer by Adriana Allen with 13:16 remaining.
The margin reached a game-high 18 points when Chevannah Paalvast's trey made it 47-29 with 7:12 to play before a pair of Roeder jumpers and two Stec free throws brought the Jaspers back within 12 at 47-35 with 5:51 left. Manhattan would get no closer, though, as Monmouth secured a 15-point, 58-43, victory.
Roeder had four rebounds to go along with her 18 points. Stec tallied 10 points off the bench, while Isaacs finished with nine points. Toni-Ann Lawrence (Elmont, N.Y.) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and Shayna Ericksen (Hackettstown, N.J.) corralled five boards. The Hawks also went 16-for-25 (64 percent) at the charity stripe.
