2012 Manhattan Volleyball Yearbook
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Manhattan College volleyball team began a six-match road trip with a non-conference matchup at Army on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, however, the Manhattan offense was never able to get going, as the Jaspers (13-12) suffered a 25-15, 25-17, 25-21 loss to the Black Knights (16-7) at Gillis Field House.
Army scored the first three points of the match and led 6-2 before the Jaspers got back-to-back points on an Ellie Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) kill and a block by Wiekamp and Juliana Behrens (Honolulu, Hawaii). The Black Knights responded with a 3-0 run to extend their cushion back to five points at 9-4. After Manhattan pulled within three at 13-10, Army used an 8-0 rally to open up a 21-10 advantage, and the Black Knights took the first set by a 25-15 count.
In the second set, the Black Knights went on an early 4-0 run to turn a 2-2 deadlock into a 6-2 lead. Manhattan took the next three points to get back within one, 6-5, but Army responded with a 10-2 spurt to increase its advantage to 16-7. After the Jaspers trimmed their deficit to five at 21-16, the Black Knights went on a 3-0 rally to reach set point. Army hit .359 (15 kills, 39 attempts) and made just one attack error in the entire set, which it won 25-17.
After Army jumped in front 5-1 in set three, the Jaspers responded with an 8-2 rally to take their first lead of the match, 9-7, before the Black Knights countered with seven of the next nine points to go back in front, 14-11. Manhattan battled back, though, and regained the lead when Kelsey Huntoon's (Monroe, Mich.) service ace made the score 19-18. However, Army rallied for the next five points regain the lead for good. The Black Knights notched a 25-21 third set victory to finish off the match and hand Manhattan its first 3-0 loss since Sept. 8.
Sydney Volovski (Oswego, Ill.) recorded her second career double-double for the Jaspers, handing out a career-high 18 assists and tying a career-best with 12 digs. Wiekamp had a team-leading nine kills and added nine digs, while Mariana Furquim (Curitiba, Brazil) tallied seven kills and 11 digs. Huntoon led Manhattan with 21 digs, and Julie Bies (Massapequa, N.Y.) contributed 10 digs, as the squads registered 70 digs apiece. As a team, the Jaspers hit .070 (25 kills, 16 errors, 128 attempts) in the match.
Ariana Markus paced the Black Knights with 12 kills on .306 hitting. She added 10 digs to complete a double-double. Margaux Jarka also notched a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs, while Nicole Perri slammed 11 kills and hit .435. Mary Vaccaro had a double-double with 27 assists and 11 digs, and Vanessa Edwards distributed 14 assists. D.J. Phee recorded a match-high 28 digs for Army. The Black Knights hit .236 (49-14-148) as a team.
The Jaspers continue their road trip with a pair of important Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) matches this weekend. Manhattan (8-5 MAAC) pays a visit to Siena (15-10, 9-4 MAAC) at 2 p.m. on Saturday. With a victory, the Jaspers would move into a tie for fourth place in the MAAC standings and hold the tiebreaker over the Saints, who they defeated 3-2 at Draddy Gymnasium on Sept. 23.
