RIVERDALE, N.Y. - In their first meet of the 2012-13 season, both the Manhattan men's and women's swim teams enjoyed big victories over the Marywood Pacers this weekend. The men (1-0) placed first in all 11 events, leading to a 165-40 win while the women (1-0) won nine events to win 140.5-64.5 at Riverdale Country Day School.
"We had incredible meets swam by our new faces," said head coach Walter Olsewski. "On our girls side, Michaela Schatz started us off great anchoring the medley relay while Vanessa L'Heureux showed she is ready to pick up the torch left by the graduation of Bridget Latino. Lance Neuendorf and Dallan Treanor began their Manhattan careers on a real high note for us as well."
Anchored by Schatz, the women's 200 yard medley relay of Kerry Schuermann, L'Heureux, and Paige Raccioppi started the meet off with a time of 2:01.37 to take first. Raccioppi also picked up a victory in the 200 yard freestyle while Schuermann was also a double winner taking the 100 yard backstroke in a time of 1:06.87 seconds.
L'Heureux was able to pick up three wins on the day also placing first in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 freestyle. Melanie Tam (100 fly), Nadine Maher (50 free), and Brianne Grant (100 breast) also earned individual wins while the team of Maher, Schatz, Nicole Maher, and Kim Geissler took the 200 yard freestyle for the Jaspers.
For the men, the Jaspers received big performances from senior Robert Varieur and PJ Sweeney as they ended with three victories including two in individual events. Treanor earned his first individual win of the season with a time of 23.14 seconds in the 50 yard freestyle as Mickey Ruddy and Mike Scire followed him up in second and third. RJ Meany (500 free) and Dennis Daly (100 back) each earned individual wins as well.
The meet also saw the debut of two-time New York state champion Lance Neuendorf, who began his career in Riverdale with a bang. After leading off the men's 200 yard medley relay, he also finished first in the 200 yard individual medley before breaking the school record in the 100 back with a time of 53.93 seconds. The previous record was held by teammate Scott Isaacs of 54.18 seconds set at last years ECAC's.
Both the men's and women's swimmers return to the pool on Sat. Oct. 20 when they travel to Fairfield for their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) meet of the year.
