Manhattan (9-10, 3-4 MAAC) makes its first of two appearances on the National MAAC Game of the Week this afternoon against Fairfield (14-5, 7-1 MAAC). Dean Darling and Debbie Ryan have the call live from Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard on ESPN3. The Jaspers have dropped four out of five, including their last two, and are coming off a 59-45 home loss to Loyola on Sunday afternoon. Fairfield sits in second place in the MAAC and has won three straight since its only conference loss. The Stags beat Niagara, 57-46, on Sunday afternoon.
THE MANHATTAN JASPERS
The Jaspers (9-10, 3-4 MAAC) have dropped two straight and four out of five to fall below .500 for the first time since Dec. 28. Manhattan fell to Loyola, 59-45, on Sunday afternoon. Senior forward Lindsey Loutsenhizer, who grabbed her 700th career rebound against Loyola, leads the Jaspers in scoring (12.4 ppg), rebounding (5.9 rpg) and assists (2.6 apg). She's also second on the team with 1.8 steals per contest. Sophomore guard Monica Roeder contributes 10.9 points per game and drains 1.9 three-pointers per outing. Her next trey will be the 100th of her career. Senior guard/forward Schyanne Halfkenny tallies 10.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, and she leads the Jaspers with 12.0 points and 5.0 boards per contest in MAAC play. Senior forward Nadia Peters grabs 5.2 rebounds a night to go along with a team-best 1.1 blocks and 2.4 steals per outing. The Jaspers wrap up a brief two-game road trip at Saint Peter's on Sunday.
THE FAIRFIELD STAGS
Fairfield (14-5, 7-1 MAAC), which has won three straight, seven out of eight, and 11 of 13, currently sits in second place in the MAAC. The Stags notched a 57-46 victory over Niagara on Sunday. Senior forward Taryn Johnson leads the MAAC in blocks (1.8 bpg) and field goal percentage (.531). She also paces the Stags with 13.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. Senior guard Desiree Pina, who plays 38.0 minutes a game, contributes 11.5 points and a team-best 3.4 assists per contest. Junior guard Katelyn Linney drains 2.2 three-pointers per game, the most in the conference, and sophomore guard Alexys Vasquez ranks first in the MAAC in three-point percentage (.461). As a team, the Stags lead the MAAC in scoring defense, allowing a mere 53.9 points per game. Fairfield is in the midst of a span where it plays four out of five games at home, with the road contest coming up at Iona on Sunday.
SERIES HISTORY
Manhattan has faced Fairfield more than any other opponent in program history. Today's game is the 74th meeting in a series that dates back to 1978-79, Manhattan's first season of varsity play. The Stags took a 37-36 lead in the all-time series with a 63-59 victory at Draddy Gymnasium on Jan. 7. That loss snapped the Jaspers' five-game winning streak against Fairfield.
LAST TIME OUT
The Jaspers dropped their second straight game, 59-45 against Loyola at Draddy Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. After Manhattan scored the first basket of the game, Loyola went on a 10-0 run to grab the lead. With the Greyhounds in front 29-19 and 4:24 remaining in the first half, Manhattan used a 10-2 rally to trim its deficit to four, 31-27, at intermission. However, an 11-2 Loyola run early in the second half brought the Greyhounds' advantage back to 14 points. Manhattan got within nine at 45-36 with 8:54 to go, but would pull no closer the rest of the way. Loyola led by as many as 16 points before handing the Jaspers a 14-point, 59-45, loss. Schyanne Halfkenny, Monica Roeder and Allison Skrec led the Jaspers with 10 points apiece, while Toni-Ann Lawrence pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
