Manhattan-Bucknell Box Score

LEWISBURG, Pa. - For the Manhattan College volleyball team, the Bucknell Tournament ended on a high note, as the Jaspers (3-2) notched a pair of straight-sets victories on Saturday.  Manhattan began the day with a 25-21, 25-21, 25-22 triumph over local rival Fordham (1-2), then notched a 25-19, 25-14, 25-22 win over the host Bison (1-1) later on Saturday afternoon at Davis Gym.

After trading points early in the first set against Fordham, the Jaspers took control when a Malia McGuinness (Kailua, Hawaii) kill ignited a 10-2 run that turned a 7-7 deadlock into a 17-9 Manhattan advantage.  Fordham responded with a 4-2 spurt to make it 19-13 before Manhattan rallied for the next four points to move within two points of finishing off the set.  However, the Rams battled back, using an 8-0 run to get back within two at 23-21.  LaKell Havens (St. George, Utah) slammed a kill to end the Fordham rally and bring Manhattan to set point, and she closed out the 25-21 win with a service ace.

In the second set, the Jaspers jumped out to an early 7-3 advantage before Fordham rallied to tie the score at 9-9.  The teams traded the next eight points before Manhattan took three straight to pull ahead 16-14.  Back-to-back kills by McGuinness extended the Manhattan advantage to 20-16, and the Jaspers reached set point on an Alexa Lampasona (Remsenburg, N.Y.).  Lampasona then pounded down another kill, Manhattan's 19th of the set, to cap a 25-21 victory.  The Jaspers hit an impressive .341 in the second set, committing just four errors in 44 attempts.

The third set proved to be just as tightly-contested as the first two, as there were seven ties and six lead changes in the set.  Manhattan again took the early lead at 6-2 before Fordham rallied to take an 8-7 advantage of its own.  With the Rams in front 12-10, a kill by Hollegn Henderson (Long Beach, Calif.) sparked a 6-0 Manhattan rally that gave the Jaspers a 16-12 edge.  The back-and-forth nature of the set continued, however, as Fordham responded by claiming seven of the next nine points to go back in front 19-18.  After a Mariana Furquim (Curitiba, Brazil) kill tied it once again at 19-19, Havens pounded a kill to put the Jaspers ahead for good.  A kill by McGuinness finished off the set, 25-22, and gave Manhattan a 3-0 match victory.

Lampasona pounded 15 kills on .303 hitting to lead Manhattan.  McGuinness added 11 kills and nine digs, while Furquim contributed eight kills.  Henderson distributed 32 assists to go along with seven digs.  Sarah Haselhorst (Naperville, Ill.) tallied a match-high 13 digs, as Manhattan outdug Fordham 44-42.  Overall, the Jaspers hit .198 (47-22-126) as a team.

For Fordham, Brittany Daulton led the way with seven kills.  She also had six digs and five blocks.  Kim Capicotto contributed six digs, while Krissy Buongiorno tallied four blocks.  Sara Konkel handed out 14 assists to go along with a team-high nine digs.  As a team, Fordham hit .099 (30-20-101) in the match.

A little more than an hour later, Manhattan was back on the court against Bucknell.  And the Jaspers continued their momentum into that match, quickly building a 13-6 lead.  However, the Bison battled back, going on a 9-4 run to get back within two at 17-15.  That's as close as Bucknell would get, though, as a McGuinness kill started a 5-2 Manhattan rally that pushed the Jaspers' advantage back to five points at 22-17.  A kill by Furquim finished off Manhattan's 25-19 set win.

In the second set, Manhattan went ahead early, opening up a 5-1 advantage, and never looked back.  Bucknell rallied for three straight points to trim its deficit to 17-13 midway through the set, but Manhattan claimed the final six points to finish off an easy 25-14 win.  The Jaspers made just three attack errors the entire set, hitting .452 (17 kills, 31 attempts).

Manhattan continued its rally in the third set, opening up a 4-0 lead.  However, the Bison fought back, using an 8-1 run of their own to turn an 8-5 deficit into a 13-9 advantage.  Then it was Manhattan's turn to rally, as the Japers scored eight of the next 12 points to tie the score at 17-17.  After Bucknell scored the next point, a McGuinness kill and a Havens ace put Manhattan back in front.  The Jaspers never trailed again, reaching match point on a kill by Lampasona, and taking the third set by a 25-22 margin to close out the 3-0 victory.

McGuinness tallied team-highs with 10 kills and seven digs, while Lampasona notched nine kills on .312 hitting.  Havens slammed six kills and committed just one error, hitting an impressive .455.  She also contributed tow aces and five blocks.  Henderson distributed 29 assists in the win.  Manhattan hit .235 (37-17-85) as a team and outdug Bucknell 35-25.

For the Bison, Jessica Serrato led the way with 10 kills.  Kyleigh McAhren added seven kills and Kristen Titley notched six kills without an error, hitting .462.  Anne Ellenberger was a part of nine of Bucknell's 10 blocks, including five solo stuffs.  Kat Tauscher handed out 25 assists, and Lindsay Regruto recorded a team-high eight digs.  As a team, Bucknell hit .119 (29-19-84) in the match.

Manhattan heads west for the Cougar Challenge at Washington State next weekend.  The Jaspers take on the host Cougars (4-1) at 3:30 p.m. ET on Friday, then face Sam Houston State (5-0) at 7:30 p.m. ET.  Manhattan concludes the tournament on Saturday with a 2 p.m. ET matchup with San Francisco (1-3).
