RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Justin Davies scored in the sixth minute of the contest to put San Diego State on top 1-0 en route to a 4-0 win over the Manhattan Jaspers Men's Soccer team on Friday night. The Aztecs ended up netting three goals in the second half and held the Jaspers (0-3) to just five shots, only two coming on net.
Davies score came off a nice string of passes that began when John Pegg chipped the ball to the left side from thirty yards to Miles Byass who went far post for Davies. He converted on the wide open net opportunity. Another golden opportunity came for SDSU late in the half when Morgan Sacco looked to have a clear shot at goalkeeper George Ellis but was called offsides.
Manhattan's limited chances came few and far between as the Aztecs seemed to control possession the majority of the game. Mere minutes after SDSU went on the board Carlo Giachino had a free kick from 32-yards out that skipped low through the defense but was stopped by keeper Tim Peitsch.
Ellis, making his second straight start, played in just the first half making one save on seven shots. The Jaspers offense only had the one shot in the half and trailed 1-0 going into the break.
In the second frame, the SDSU attack continued as a flurry of shots in the box ended up with Ata Ozbay finishing a rebound from close range in the 53rd minute beating Christopher Lands. The sophomore keeper would once again be beaten on a soft chip shot Chance Marden into the box that allowed Byass to slip past Lands to net the third Aztec goal in the 71st minute.
San Diego State (2-1-1) tacked on their fourth goal in the 85th minute Jose Altamirano scored off a feed from Jordan Ongaro. Byass tried for his second goal of the night two minutes later but pushed his shot wide right. The Jaspers were limited to just four shots in the second half, with Daniel Festa placing one on net in the 54th minute that was stopped by the keeper.
Manhattan was outshot 20-5 in the contest including 13-4 in the second half. The two teams tied in corner kicks with each having two in the game. Giachino was given his third yellow card of the season in the 90th minute of the game while two Aztecs were also booked in the match.
The Jaspers continue their stay in California when they play the University of San Diego on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. They then return home for their home opener on Friday Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. against St. Francis (NY).
