RIVERDALE, N.Y. - In a contest of two of the leading teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the Manhattan men's lacrosse team fell to Detroit 13-7 Saturday afternoon at Titan Field.
A high-scoring affair featuring 20 goals and 72 shots, each team traded tallies early in the contest before the Titans (4-8, 3-1 MAAC) pulled away from the Jaspers (3-10, 2-1 MAAC) in the third quarter.
For Manhattan, senior attacker Kelly Mahon and classmate Brett Miranda each had two goals while fourth-year member Justin Jensen and junior Brendan Rogers added one apiece. Detroit attacker Alex Maini led all scorers with four scores on the day.
An exciting contest through the first two quarters, Detroit started the action with a goal by Maini to make it 1-0 Titans at the 12:55 mark of the first quarter. After Shayne Adams made it 2-0 just 16 seconds later, Manhattan battled back with two of the next three goals. Rogers got the Jaspers on the board off an assist from Marcel Godino at the 9:15 ledger to cut the deficit to 2-1.
After Maini scored his second tally to make it 3-1 Detroit with 7:44 left in the first, Miranda cut the lead to 3-2 with a goal just 57 seconds into the second quarter.
From there, the Titans and Jaspers would split a pair of goals in a 2:30 span. Detroit's Maini and Scott Harris tallied first to make it a 5-2 contest with 13:17 remaining before senior Chris LoGiudice and Mahon went back-to-back to pull Manhattan within one at 5-4 with 11:25 left in the half. Detroit's Troy Dennis would add one more score at the 6:14 mark to send the Titans into the locker room leading 6-4.
In the third quarter, Detroit put the contest out of reach. Scoring four straight goals out of the break, including three on man-up opportunities, the Titans sprinted out to a 10-4 lead with 10:28 remaining and never looked back in picking up rhe victory.
Detroit Goalkeeper A.J. Levell made 14 saves in picking up the win, with Manhattan freshman Rich Akapnitis recording eight saves in the loss.
Overall, the Jaspers held advantages in ground balls (32-28) and face-offs (13-10) while the Titans led the way in shots (37-35), clears (18-14) and extra-man opportunities (3-1).
Manhattan looks to regain their winning form in the MAAC when they head to Loudonville, N.Y. next Saturday for a 1 p.m. showdown with Siena.
