Jaspers Downed By Hofstra In West Hempstead

Box Score

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan men's lacrosse team fell behind 5-0 after the first quarter and could not recover in a 13-8 loss to No. 8 Hofstra Tuesday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium.

Coming off back-to-back victories to open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, the Jaspers (3-9) looked to continue their winning ways but ran into a red-hot Pride (9-1) team unwilling to cooperate on a chilly night in West Hempstead, N.Y.

Freshman attacker Marcel Godino led Manhattan with two goals, with senior attackers Mike Llewellyn and Kelly Mahon, each adding one.

Starting slow out of the gates, Manhattan gave up the first seven goals of the contest, including three to attacker Jamie Lincoln, to concede a 7-0 deficit with 11:20 remaining in the second quarter.

Answering back with two straight scores, Manhattan cut the deficit to 7-2 after goals by Jensen and junior midfielder Brendan Rogers. Jensen got the Jaspers on the board with an unassisted tally at the 10:28 mark of the second period before Rogers did the same with 7:54 remaining in the opening half.

Showing why they are one of the best teams in the nation, Hofstra responded with three scores in the final 4:14 to take a 10-2 lead into the locker room.

Putting together a much improved final 30 minutes of play, Manhattan outscored the Pride 6-3 overall, including a 5-1 margin in the final quarter on tallies by senior Chris LoGiudice, Godino, Mahon and second-year midfielder Tyler Jarvis but it would not be enough as the Jaspers dropped their first contest in three games.

A game statistically favoring Hofstra, the home team held advantages in shots (25-19), ground balls (36-19), face-offs (17-8) and extra-man opportunities (3-3/0-1).

In the cage, Hofstra's Andrew Gvozden made two saves in picking up the victory. For Manhattan freshman goalkeeper Rich Akapnitis recorded six saves in the defeat.

The Jaspers look to rebound Saturday, when they head to Detroit, Mich. to take on the Titans in a big-time MAAC contest. Opening face-off is set for 1 p.m.
