RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Following two difficult matches to open the 2011 spring season, the Manhattan men's golf team found their swing the third time around, besting Saint Peter's 298 to 300 in a dual match Tuesday afternoon at the Siwanoy Country Club.
A rematch of last week's MAAC defeat at the hands of the Peacocks, the Jaspers got their much-needed revenge in the second meeting, led by the outstanding quartet of tri-captains Thomas Romano and Matt Baney, senior Anthony Dinelli and freshman Chris Calabro.
"An outstanding comeback effort by our golf team after being beaten in large fashion last week," Coach Walter Olsewski said. "Our veterans really stepped up and led the way this afternoon."
Picking up where he left off in the fall season, Romano shot an impressive 68 through 18 holes to lead all golfers. Adding strong scores on the day, Baney finished the round with a 72 while Calabro and Dinelli ended the contest with totals of 77 and 81, respectively.
Also participating in the event, junior Chris Critelli picked up a final of 82 with sophomore Kyle DeRespinis walking off the green with a score of 88. The 298 total score was the third lowest dual match finish in golf team history.
For Saint Peter's, golfers Andrew Gain and Sean Fitzpatrick had very strong outings for the Jersey City-based school, ending the day with tallies of 73 and 76.
The Jaspers return to action this weekend when they head to Dracut, Mass. to participate in the 2011 River Hawk Invitational at Meadow Creek Golf Course. Tee-off time is set for 1 p.m.
