RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan baseball team extended the longest active winning streak in NCAA Division I to 10 games on Sunday with a 3-1 victory at Saint Peter's (10-18, 2-4 MAAC). Jaspers' senior outfielder Mark Onorati posted two doubles and tied Kevin Nieto '10 for the program's career hits record by logging the 257th of his career in the ninth inning. Junior starter Mike Giordano won his fourth straight start, while freshman reliever Jacob Marchus earned his third save of the season as Manhattan (15-11, 9-0 MAAC) swept its third consecutive conference series.
Giordano pitched eight strong innings, registering six strikeouts and yielding only four hits in the contest. The right-hander from Bedford, N.Y. carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning as he retired the first 12 batters in order.
The Jaspers' offense gave Giordano instant support by scoring the first run of the ballgame in the first inning. Onorati led off the game with a double to left center, and three batters later with two-outs senior outfielder Mike McCann drove him in for his 20th RBI of the year. McCann extended his team leading consecutive game hitting streak to 16 games as he went 2-for-3 from the plate, marking his sixth multi-hit performance this season.
Manhattan left six batters on base before capitalizing again in the eighth inning. The Jaspers scored two runs with a RBI single from senior third baseman Chad Salem and a sacrifice fly from sophomore designated hitter Kyle Murphy, which put Manhattan ahead 3-0. Salem increased his team-leading RBI season total to 28. Murphy went 2-for-3 from the plate as he completed the series with Saint Peter's batting a team-best .625 (5-for-8).
Saint Peter's scored its only run of the game in the eighth inning on a one-out, bases loaded RBI single from senior second baseman Chris Haack. Peacocks' freshman starting pitcher Zach Hopf lasted 7 1/3 innings and was responsible for all three earned runs as he took the loss.
Manhattan went to the bullpen in the ninth as Marchus was perfect in the frame. The Miami native worked the Peacocks for three straight ground outs to secure the victory.
The Jaspers return to action on Tuesday when Manhattan hosts Sacred Heart. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. at Van Cortlandt Park.
