Jaspers Fall to Notre Dame

Box Score

RIVERDALE, N.Y. -
The Manhattan baseball team dropped its third contest at the Coca-Cola Classic in Rock Hill, S.C. on Saturday. The Jaspers were edged by Notre Dame 5-4 in extra innings.

Manhattan (2-5) could not hold on to a three run lead as Notre Dame (4-5) erupted for four runs in the eighth inning, and then used a RBI single from center fielder Charlie Markson to send the winning run across the plate in the 10th inning. Jaspers' starting pitcher Mike Giordano was dominant on the hill yielding just three hits and no runs through seven innings.

Manhattan jumped out to a 3-0 lead after RBI singles in the fifth inning from sophomore Kyle Murphy and freshman Yoandry Galan. In the sixth inning, senior third baseman Chad Salem doubled for the fourth time this season to lead off the inning, and then two batters later Austin Sheffield delivered the sacrifice fly which allowed Salem to score. Salem delivered two hits in the ballgame.

The Fighting Irish caught up with Giordano in the eighth inning working the first three runs of a four run frame off of the right-hander from Bedford, N.Y. Notre Dame freshman Eric Jagielo posted the first big hit of the inning with a two RBI single down the right field line. The Jaspers went to the bullpen and turned the ball over to freshman Jacob Marchus who recorded the last two outs of the inning, but not before freshman designated hitter Trey Mancini and senior shortstop Mick Doyle each knocked in runs to send Notre Dame ahead 4-3.

Giordano struck out five batters in the contest, while Marchus registered three in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Jaspers' catcher Ramon Ortega evened the game in the bottom of the ninth with a RBI single down the left field line. The clutch hit sent Mike McCann across the plate to lock the contest at 4-4 and send it into extra innings.

Manhattan went to freshman pitcher Scott McClennan in the 10th inning. McClennan got out two of the first three batters faced, but allowed a double by Mancini. It set the stage for sophomore centerfielder Charlie Markson's game winning single to center field.

The Jaspers went down in order in their half of the 10th inning as Fighting Irish relief pitcher Joe Hudgins secured his first win of the year. Hudgins allowed just one hit and struck out two batters, recording the last seven outs.

Manhattan's second game on Saturday with tournament host Winthrop was postponed due to inclement weather. It has been rescheduled for Sunday at 12 p.m.
