Manhattan (2-5) plays its final road game of the 2011 calendar year tonight at Lundholm Gymnasium against New Hampshire (3-4). The Jaspers, who dropped a 48-43 decision at Lafayette on Saturday afternoon, are looking to snap a two-game losing streak. The Wildcats have also lost two straight, including a 69-62 defeat at the hands of Harvard on Tuesday night. After tonight's game, the Jaspers take an eight-day break for finals before starting a season-long five-game homestand against Monmouth on Dec. 17.
THE MANHATTAN JASPERS
The Jaspers (2-5) conclude their non-conference road slate looking to snap a two-game losing streak. Manhattan is coming off a 48-43 loss at Lafayette on Saturday afternoon. Senior forward Lindsey Loutsenhizer had 17 points against Lafayette to move into 15th place on the Jaspers' all-time scoring chart. She currently leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.0 points per game. Loutsenhizer also pulls down a team-best 7.0 rebounds per contest. Sophomore guard/forward Monica Roeder contributes 12.7 points per game, while senior guard/forward Schyanne Halfkenny adds 7.9 points and 4.9 boards per outing. Senior forward Nadia Peters collects 5.7 rebounds to go along with a team-high 1.4 blocks per game. Junior guard Maggie Blair leads the Jaspers in assists, distributing 4.3 per contest. Following tonight's matchup, Manhattan has eight days off before starting a season-long five-game homestand against Monmouth on Dec. 17.
THE NEW HAMPSHIRE WILDCATS
New Hampshire (3-4) dropped its second straight decision, 69-62, against Harvard on Tuesday night. Senior forward Denise Beliveau, who scored her 1,000th career point earlier this season, paces the Wildcats with 11.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per outing. She also averages a team-best 1.3 steals per contest. Junior guard Cari Reed had 32 points and a program-record eight three-pointers against Harvard. Reed drains 2.7 three-pointers per game and is shooting .500 from downtown on the season. She ranks second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.3 points per game. Sophomore guard Kelsey Hogan contributes 10.0 points and 4.6 boards per outing, while senior guard Abigail LaRosa is the team leader in assists (2.6 apg). This is the final contest of a season-long three-game homestand for the Wildcats. Second-year Head Coach Maureen Magarity won a MAAC championship as a player at Marist in 2004.
SERIES HISTORY
Last season's 68-51 Manhattan victory at Draddy Gymnasium revived a series that had been dormant since the 2002-03 campaign. Overall this is the sixth all-time meeting between the Jaspers and Wildcats, with Manhattan holding a 3-2 edge. The last time the squads met in Durham was on Nov. 22, 2002, when the Wildcats posted a 47-43 win.
LAST TIME OUT
Manhattan battled back from a 14-point deficit to take a one-point lead in the second half before coming up just short, 48-43, against host Lafayette on Saturday afternoon. Lafayette used a 12-0 run to take a 17-6 lead midway through the first half and pushed that advantage to 25-11 with 4:35 remaining before halftime. Manhattan used an 11-2 run to cut its deficit to five, but the Leopards hit a trey at the buzzer to take a 30-22 advantage into the locker room. The Jaspers came all the way back to take a 40-39 lead with 6:40 left to play, but Lafayette outscored Manhattan 9-3 the rest of the way to earn the victory. Lindsey Loutsenhizer had a game-high 17 points, including the 1,100th of her career, and added nine rebounds, while Nadia Peters grabbed a team-best 10 boards.
