Storrs, Conn. - Carlos Alvarez scored in the fifth minute on junior keeper George Ellis as the top ranked Connecticut Huskies went on to defeat Manhattan 3-0 at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium on Tuesday night.
His third goal of the season came on Stephane Diop sent a cross from the left side that Alvarez re-directed past Ellis to get the number one team in the nation on the board early.
The Jaspers tried to hang with the Huskies but could only muster a total of eight shots, with four coming in each half. Seniors Christopher Holihan and Deia Nassar each had two shots on the day. Nassar, whose two shots were both on net, made just his third start of the season.
In the 18th minute, Juho Karppinen added to the lead with a hard, low shot from close range. The lead went to three for UCONN in the 42nd minute when Diop recovered a save from Ellis and buried the rebound in the net.
Manhattan (0-9-0) continued to try and climb in to the contest putting three shots on net the entire game, with all of them being saved by keeper Andre Blake. The teams' best chance came in the final moments as Holihan ripped one to the right side of the net but it went high over the crossbar.
