EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Manhattan Men's swim team competed in four meets at Mount Saint Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md. winning three of them in very impressive fashion. On Friday, the Jaspers dominated NJIT 160-32 before falling to VMI 135-70 to begin their weekend. On Saturday, their strong beginning to the season continued with wins over McDaniel College (133-69) and NJIT (163-24).
Bobby Varieur won the 50 meter freestyle on Friday with a time of 24.58 seconds as well at the 100 meter free. He was the only individual winner on Day 1 for the Jaspers who also saw the team of Michael Scire, RJ Meany, PJ Sweeney and Mickey Ruddy finish second in the 400 meter freestyle relay. Mike Mackay narrowly missed an individual win as he place second in the 100 meter breaststroke with a time of 1:10.47 seconds, just .02 second behind the first place finisher Stephen Lloyd of VMI.
In Day 2 of competition, the Jaspers placed first in nine of the eleven events. Scott Isaacs, Dennis Daly, Sweeney and Scire won the 200 meter medley relay to open competition for the men. Sweeney also won the 800 meter freestyle, and 200 meter fly. Daly was another multiple winner, placing first in the 200 meter breaststroke.
Other winners included Meany placing first in the 200 & 400 meter free, Varieur in the 50 meter & 100 meter free, while the team of Mickey Ruddy, Ryan Klages, Varieur, and Meany took first in the 800 meter freestyle relay.
The Jaspers (6-1) will be back in action on Fri., Nov. 4 when they host Iona.
