RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan Men's Swimming team opened their 2011-12 home swimming schedule with back-to-back victories over local rival Mount Saint Vincent's on Friday (106-70) and Pace University on Saturday (99-58). The victory on Friday, coupled with a win from the women's swim squad, gave head coach Walter Olsewski his 150th coaching win at Manhattan where he has been at the head of the program since the 1997-98 season.
On Friday, Mike Mackay was victorious in three separate events, placing first in the 200 medley relay, the 100 yard breaststroke and the 100 yard individual medley. Mackay was able to break the school's record in the 100 IM with a new time of 57.85, beating the 1:00.06 mark set last season by current swimmer Cullen Balcanoff. His teammates in the medley relay included Balcanoff, Mickey Ruddy and Dennis Daly as the four combined to post a time of 1:43.72 in the event.
In Saturday's meet, the Jaspers again relied on multiple top finishes from their individual swimmers. Ryan Klages took first in both the 200 freestyle (1:51.49) and the 100 butterfly (57.45). Robert Varieur was also victorious in two events, the 50 and 100 yard freestyle, while Scott Isaacs finished first in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 58.58. He also was a part of the team that finished first in the 200 yard freestyle relay along with RJ Meany, Mickey Ruddy and Klages.
The Jaspers are now 3-0 on the season which continues this weekend at Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md. where they will compete with VMI, NJIT, and McDaniel in a two day event beginning on Fri. Oct. 28.
