SCRANTON, Pa. - The Jaspers Men's and Women's each won their season opening meets at Marymount University on Saturday afternoon with scores of 150-70 for the men and 121-84 for the women.
Top performers for Manhattan included Mary Lynn McMahon who won the Women's 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 12:16.95 while Emily Kearns placed third in the event finishing with a time of 13:17.76.
Kim Geissler was also a winner on the women's side as she finished the 200 yard freestyle in 2:08.12 finishing four seconds ahead of Marymount's Molly Hitesman. In the women's individual medley, Vanessa L'Heureux won her event with a time of 2:24.80 while also winning the 100 yard breaststroke (1:15.35) and teamed up with Kerry Schuermann, Lindsie Holmes and Geissler to win the 200 yard medley relay with a combined 2:00.74 time. Bridget Latino also took a first place finish in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.53. Schuermann was also able to pick up her first individual victory as a member of the Jaspers winning the 100 yard backstroke in 1:05.42.
As for the men the 200 yard freestyle relay team of RJ Meany, Ryan Klages, Mickey Ruddy, and Bobby Varieur finished first out of four teams with a combined time of 1:30.65. Meany also finished first in the 500 yard freestyle (5:12.52) while Klages won the 200 yard individual free (1:50.70), and Varieur took home first in the 50 yard freestyle at 21.95 seconds.
PJ Sweeny was also able to garner a first place finish as he won the 1000 yard freestyle event in 10:39.33 with Meany finishing in second place. Mike Mackay, Cullen Balcanoff and Dennis Daly finished 1-2-3 in the 200 yard individual medley taking 16 of the possible 19 points in that event for Manhattan. Daly also won the 100 yard individual breaststroke with a 1:02.13 time.
Both Men's and Women's Swimming teams will be in action next weekend, Friday, Oct. 21, when they host Mt. St. Vincent at Riverdale County High School at 6:30 p.m. before Homecoming on Saturday Oct. 22, with a meet against Pace at 2 p.m.
