BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Manhattan Jaspers Men's Soccer team won their first match since September 5, 2009 with a 2-1 victory over the Canisius Golden Griffins on Friday night. The win snapped not only a 43-game winless streak, but also ended a stretch of 39 straight losses that dated back to Sept. 20 of that year.
The Jaspers (1-12-0) scored first when Tommy Amos notched his first collegiate goal in the 12th minute when Jake Scavetta hit him with a pass from fifteen yards out that the freshman buried with a one timer.
An extremely fast-paced game saw both goalkeepers get peppered with shots (Manhattan-14; Canisius-16) and both make very solid saves. The Golden Griffins were able to find an equalizer moments after Manhattan took the lead Denver Spearman laid a cross in the face of goal that was headed in by Asani Samuels in the 15th minute.
A mere 1:19 later Trevor Chiduku was awarded a penalty kick that he scorched past Canisius keeper Kareem Gray. That would be the final goal of the contest but not the last piece of action.
Both squads were extremely physical with one another as a total of 43 fouls were committed (Canisius-22; Manhattan-21) and 10 cards were issued. Carlo Giachino, Sean Towey, George Ellis, CJ Dragovich, and Amos all received yellows for the Jaspers while Andrew Santos was issued a red card in the 88th minute giving Canisius a penalty kick. Jared Ott took the kick for the Griffins but George Ellis guessed right and made his fourth save of the night to preserve the win.
Canisius' A.C. LaFlore, Kareem Gray, Samuels, and Ott were all booked as well in the match. Gray made a total of five saves on the night.
The Jaspers will look to start a winning streak when they take on the Niagara Purple Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 12 p.m.
