RIVERDALE, N.Y. - After scoring within 11 seconds of each other in the first 1:13 of the contest, the Manhattan women's soccer team and Fordham (3-0) battled into double overtime before the Rams used a goal from junior Mariella Romano to upend the Lady Jaspers, 2-1, in the 105th minute. Senior Caroline Morse scored Manhattan's (1-1) lone goal in its first set back of the 2010 campaign.
Fordham struck first just 62 seconds into the contest when seniors Danielle Ingram and Michelle Ancelj paired up for the go ahead score. Ingram settled a cross from Ancelj and connected on a shot from 10 yards out.
The Lady Jaspers answered quickly with Morse's first goal of the season and 17th of her career at the 1:13 mark. The native of Lebanon, N.J. got past her defender and blasted a bending shot inside the right post from 12 yards out.
Manhattan and Fordham had a scoreless duel through the remainder of regulation and through the first overtime. Lady Jaspers' goalkeeper Kara Davis was a major factor in net recording a career-high 11 saves, including her six stops in the second half and overtime. On the opposite end of the field, Rams' goalie Rachel Suther made four saves on the afternoon.
The Lady Jaspers surrendered the decisive goal 4:14 into the second overtime when Romano sent a header into the back of the net. Katie McDermott, a senior midfielder, set up the play with a cross that Romano was able to finish with.
Manhattan has a week to regroup before traveling to West Point, N.Y. for its next match against Army on Sunday. Kick off is slated for 1 p.m.
