RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan baseball team dropped the first game of its second series of the season falling 15-9 at Delaware (3-4) on Saturday at Bob Hannah Stadium. The Blue Hens used a seven run fourth inning to distance itself from the Jaspers as they move to 1-3 on the season. The second game of the doubleheader was suspended in the bottom of the eighth due to darkness. The Jaspers were leading 16-10 when the game was called, but it will be completed tomorrow at 11 a.m. prior to the second doubleheader.
Manhattan erased a two run deficit as the Jaspers posted its first five runs of the game in the second inning. Two runs walked across the plate, and then junior Mark Onorati delivered a two RBI single, which was followed by Chad Salem's RBI double. Salem finished 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBI.
Delaware tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second to pull within 5-4 on a two run blast from Todd Menchaca. Menchaca was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Freshman shortstop Nick Camastro drove in the Jaspers' sixth run in the third inning, and then Manhattan received three more runs in the fourth to take a 9-4 edge.
The Blue Hens answered back in the fourth with a seven run surge beginning with Steve Ulaky's double to center, followed by Josh Dean's home run to right field. Pat Dameron capped the inning with a two-run single to right field, which gave the squad an 11-9 advantage, a lead it would not relinquish.
Manhattan starting pitcher Mike Gazzola allowed 11 earned runs and posted one strikeout in his first loss of the year. Blue Hens' reliever Devon Pearson picked up the win after allowing just three hits over the final 3 2/3 innings.
Jaspers junior Mike McCann was a bright spot finishing 3-for-4 on the day. Onorati and Camastro also had two hits in the contest.
