Staten Island, N.Y. (March 6, 2010) -- Led by sophomore Chrissy Gutenberger's four goals, the Manhattan College women's lacrosse team came out on top in a tight game against Wagner College 13-11. The win was the Lady Jaspers first of the young season.
Phelicia VanOverbeke added a hat trick for Manhattan, while Caralyn Hickey, Julia Lavelle netted two goals and BrieAnna Spatarella and Elizabeth Dugan chipped in with one goal each. Hickey and Lavelle each had an assist for the Lady Jaspers (1-2 overall, 0-0 in MAAC play). Wagner's attack was led by Carolyn Clark who tallied four goals and Krista Malayten and Melanie Garces who had two goals each.
Manhattan's Gutenberger was a force all over the field, as she also picked up 2 ground balls and caused 3 turnovers. Ashley McHale had 2 ground balls and Keri Morrison had two caused turnovers.
Manhattan dominated the shot chart, picking up 36 shots to Wagner's 21. Lady Jasper goalkeeper Julia DiBernardo had two saves in goal.
Manhattan went out on top less than three minutes into the match on a Hickey tally, but Wagner scored less than a minute later to tie the game only to see Manhattan take the draw and take the lead within 10 seconds on a goal by VanOverbeke. Ten minutes went by before the next goal by Wagner tied the score at 2-2 and then the Lady Jaspers put up a two goal streak in the first half half's final 12:46 to take a 4-2 lead into the locker room.
Manhattan opened up the second half with a four goal streak within the half's first seven minutes before Wagner broke that streak with a goal at 21:40 to make the score 8-3. A Hickey goal at 19:51 took the score to 9-3 before Wagner went on a three goal run to make the score 9-6, but that streak was broken by Manhattan at the 12:57 mark on a tally by VanOverbeke.and then another goal a minute later by Spatarella to make the score 11-6 with 11:28 to go in the match. The teams then traded goals before Wagner scored three goals toward the end of the game to make the score 13-11.
Manhattan now takes one day off before the team's home opener Monday at 10 a.m. against the University of California-Davis.
