RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan baseball team posted six runs in the second inning and five runs in the fourth inning as it earned a 12-8 victory over cross-Bronx rival Fordham (2-7) on Tuesday at Houlihan Park. Junior outfielder Mark Onorati and senior Anthony Armenio each tallied three hits, while red-shirt freshman Ramon Ortega was 4-for-5 at the plate in Manhattan's (5-3) fourth straight win.
Manhattan hit through the order in the second inning converting four hits into the first six runs of the ballgame. Fordham starting pitcher J.P. Mack walked in the first run, and then the Jaspers' received offensive production from freshman Kyle Murphy, Nick Camastro and senior Kevin Nieto who each drove in a run, before Onorati delivered a two-RBI double to center.
The Rams battled back with four runs in bottom of the second inning. Senior shortstop Brian Kownacki capped the rally with a two-RBI single down the line to pull within 6-4.
Manhattan made a call to the bullpen in the third inning for sophomore Taylor Sewitt who provided stability on the mound over the next three frames replacing starter Zac Goyer. Sewitt recorded two strikeouts and allowed only three hits without an earned run leading to his first win.
The Jaspers expanded their advantage to 11-4 courtesy of Chad Salem's two-RBI single, RBI doubles from Ortega and Murphy, and a RBI single from Armenio. The runs Salem drove in represented his team-leading 11th and 12th RBIs of the year.
Manhattan relievers Mike Gonzalez, Tom Moran, Mike Gazzola and John Soldinger each got in an inning of work. Gonzalez set the standard tossing a scoreless sixth inning with a strikeout, and fellow freshman Soldinger closed the contest with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning.
The Jaspers tagged on another run in the seventh on Mike McCann's as Manhattan has won its fifth game in the last six contests. Manhattan tallied 16 hits in the ballgame.
The Jaspers return to action this weekend at West Virginia. Manhattan begins its four game series with the Mountaineers on Friday at 3 p.m. in Morgantown.
