Gutenberger Tallies Five, But Women's Lacrosse Edged 10-9 by Sacred Heart

Louisville, KY  -- Manhattan College sophomore Chrissy Gutenberger scored five goals, but the Lady Jaspers were edged 10-9 by Sacred Heart University in a game played at the University of Louisville.

Julia Lavelle talled two goals for Manhattan and Tara Convery and Caralyn Hickey chipped in with a goal each.  Hickey and Lavelle had two assists each; Gutenberger and Helen Kerrisk each also had an assist. Defensively, Kerrisk had an outstanding game with four caused turnovers and 6 ground balls.  Kristen Brenner had 3 caused turnovers and 4 ground balls, while Keri Morrison caused 2 turnovers and collected 4 ground balls. In goal for Manhattan, Julia DiBernardo had eight saves.

For Sacred Heart (now 1-1 on the season), Carissa Hauser had five goals and goalkeeper Laura Staffin posted 14 saves.  Manhattan outshot Sacred Heart 28-22.

Manhattan (now 0-2  on the young season) found themselves down 3-0 within the first three minutes of the match, but then Gutenberger scored her first goal at 26:06. Sacred Heart scored again a minute or so later to make the score 4-1, but then Gutenberger scored two more and Lavelle added one to bring the Lady Jaspers back even at 4-4 with 19:23 to go in the first half.

However, Sacred Heart then went on a 4 goal run over the next eight minutes to take the score to 8-4 before Gutenberg ended that run with just over 6 minutes to go in the half to make the score 8-5, which is where the teams stood at halftime.

Manhattan scored two goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half - one by Gutenberger and one by Lavelle to make the game 8-7 Sacred Heart, but the Pioneers brought a two goals back to make the score 10-7.  The Lady Jaspers scored a comeback in the last four plus minutes, getting a goal from Hickey and one from Convery to bring the game to within a goal, but Manhattan couldn't find the tying goal in the waning minutes.

Manhattan's next game is Saturday at 1 p.m. in Staten Island against Wagner.
