RIVERDALE, N.Y. - In a non-conference match before the final four games of the MAAC slate, the Manhattan women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 affair with Columbia (9-2-3) on Monday at Gaelic Park. Lions' freshman forward Coleen Rizzo scored the game winning goal in the 37th minute, while senior goalkeeper Lindsay Danielson pitched a shutout.
Lady Jaspers' senior Alyssa Bachowski received her third start of the season in net and posted a career high seven saves over 90 minutes of action. Manhattan (4-10-1) also received a solid effort on the offensive end by senior forward Kristin Spiros who placed two of her three shots on net.
Columbia got its first goal of the match with 36:21 on the clock when Rizzo located a shot from 25 yards out into the top right corner. Lions' junior forward Marissa Schultz and freshman midfielder Lexi Nichols recorded assists on the play.
The Lions got on the board again to ensure the win in the 86th minute, despite a hard fought effort in the second half from the Lady Jaspers. Columbia freshman back Chelsea Ryan finished a header inside the box off a feed from senior captain Kelly Hostetler, who is tied for first in the Ivy League with seven assists.
Manhattan posted a game high 24 shots, but Danielson weathered the storm with nine saves in the spot start. Columbia had a 7-1 corner kick advantage in the match.
The Lady Jaspers return to league play on Friday to begin their final home weekend of the season. Manhattan will play a vital match to their MAAC Tournament hopes against Loyola at 7 p.m. The Lady Jaspers will hold Senior Day on Sunday prior to their contest with Rider at 10 a.m.
