JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Manhattan men's basketball was topped 72-44 at Saint Peter's on Sunday in an ESPNU telecast from the Yanitelli Center. Jaspers' junior guard Rico Pickett led Manhattan (7-15, 2-10) with 12 points and six rebounds. Saint Peter's (13-9, 8-4) used a double-double from junior forward Ryan Bacon (23 points, 13 rebounds) and 19 points and nine rebounds from Wesley Jenkins to split the regular-season series with the Jaspers for the third straight season.
Manhattan could not find its groove from the get go as it was held to its lowest scoring output in a period this season. Saint Peter's used a 17-2 run to create separation and carried a 35-17 advantage into the break.
Senior guard Darryl Crawford had six points at intermission and Pickett scored five in the period. Crawford posted eight points in the contest over 33 minutes of work.
The Peacocks used a solid defensive effort to slow down Manhattan. Saint Peter's entered the game yielding a league best 60.3 points. Manhattan shot only 30.5% from the field in the contest to Saint Peter's 44.8% mark. The Peacocks also tallied nine steals and six blocks.
Saint Peter's dominated the 'Battle of the Boards' outrebounding Manhattan 55-29. Manhattan had trouble stopping the Peacocks' big men who tallied 44 of their 72 points in the paint. Saint Peter's prospered on 24 second chance points.
Freshman guard George Beamon was a bright spot brining the Jaspers energy off the bench in the second half. Beamon scored six points and made a career-high four steals in 11 minutes of action.
Manhattan looks to snap its seven game skid on Friday when the Jaspers host Marist at 9 p.m. in Riverdale. The contest will air live on ESPNU and is the second half of a doubleheader with the Manhattan women.
