RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Junior forward Caroline Morse was involved with each of the Lady Jaspers' goals as the Manhattan women's soccer team earned a 3-2 victory at Fairleigh Dickinson (2-2) on Sunday. Morse set up the Lady Jaspers first two scores, and then netted the game winning goal in the 79th minute to give Manhattan (2-2) its second win of the 2009 campaign.
After a scoreless first half, the teams lit up the net with all five goals in the second. It was in the 63rd minute when the Lady Jaspers struck first on senior co-captain Courtney McMahon's first goal of the season and ninth of her career. McMahon accepted a pass from Morse up the right side and finished from 10 yards out.
Just over five minutes later, Knights freshman Francesca Yaccarine knotted the match at 1-1 when she converted a goal off a feed from sophomore Rashidah Sherman. The Lady Jaspers' quickly retaliated when senior Alexandra Konneker blasted a header into the back of the net from 16 yards out in the 71st minute. Again, the Lady Jaspers' goal was set up by Morse to give Manhattan a 2-1 advantage.
Sherman managed to even the contest for the second time with 73:52 on the clock when senior Christine Niven set her up for her team leading fifth point of the year.
Finally, in the 79th minute Morse completed the 17 minute second half scoring flurry when she tallied her team leading fourth goal and 10th point of the year to put the Lady Jaspers up for good. The forward from Lebanon, N.J. managed to track down a cross deflected by FDU goalkeeper Megan MacKellar, and punched it into the back of the net.
The Manhattan defense, which was supported by starting backs Jill Beauchamp, Amanda Fischer and Kara Bucci, was able hold off the Knights in the final 11 minutes to secure the victory. Lady Jaspers' freshman goaltender Kara Davis played all 90 minutes and made two saves.
Manhattan resumes its three game road series on Friday when the squad travels to local rival Columbia for a 7 p.m. match.
