Riverdale, N.Y. - The Manhattan men's soccer team fell to Long Island Univesity 3-1, with the Blackbirds getting two second half goals from Jakeem Johnson.
In a match played at Gaelic Park, Manhattan dominated most of the possession on the evening and outshot LIU 15-10, but fell behind 46 seconds into the second half when the Blackbird's Elliot Kane poked in a long throw in by Rommel Forde. LIU then scored again 13 minutes later when Johnson took a pass up the right side by Steve Jakubowski and slotted the ball into the right side of the new.
The Jaspers (now 1-7-1) brought a goal back in the 65th minute when senior James Gannon tallied his first goal of the season, poking in a rebound off a strong shot by fellow senior Nick White.
Pressuring the LIU defense, Manhattan had several more chances in the final 20 minutes, but couldn't put the tying goal away. Moving everyone up into the offensive zone, the Jaspers found themselves shorthanded in the back when Johnson scored the game clinching goal on a breakaway with just over a minute to go in the contest.
Manhattan's junior goalkeeper Joseph Lorenz made one save on the evening, while LIU's keeper, John Connolly posted five saves. The Blackbirds are now 3-3-0 on the season.
Manhattan now has a week off before it travels to Long Island to take on Adelphi Saturday at 6:30 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y.
