Riverdale, N.Y. -- Each year it seems the men's soccer Battle of the Bronx comes down to one goal. This year was no different as the Manhattan College squad dropped a 1-0 game to Fordham in a match played this evening at Gaelic Park.
The difference in the game was a goal in the 23rd minute of the first half as the Rams took advantage of a miscue by the Jaspers in midfield and broke forward on a breakaway that resulted in a goal by Veer Lakham-Joseph on an assist from Aaron Markowitz.
Fordham had the better of the play in the first half, outshooting Manhattan 10-3, but the game turned around in the second half, with Manhattan dominating possession, but not finding the goal while outshooting the Rams 6 to 4 in the final stanza.
"Defensively, we were pretty strong all game and we definitely picked it up possession-wise in the second half, but we just couldn't find the combination to get to goal," said Manhattan head coach Michael Swanwick.
Manhattan goalkeeper Joseph Lorenz was outstanding in goal, making five saves, at least two of which were from point-blank range. Fordham's Ryan Meara had the shutout in goal for the Rams.
Manhattan returns to Gaelic Park Friday for a game against another inter-borough rival as they kick off against Brooklyn's Long Island University at 7 p.m.
