New Rochelle, N.Y. -- The Manhattan College men's soccer team fell to regionally-ranked local rival Iona CollegeFriday 3-0 in a game played at Iona in New Rochelle.
Both teams spent the first 25 minutes of the match exchanging possession in the midfield before Iona (10-1-2 overall and 4-0-0 in the MAAC) broke through when Fernando Liserra juggled a ball over a Manhattan defender and slotted the ball into the net to give Iona a 1-0 lead. '
Less than 10 minutes later, Manhattan scored again when freshman Alvara Torrecilla tallied off a series of combination passes by Mario Rios and Lisserra.
Manhattan (now 1-13-1 overall and 0-5-0 in the MAAC) regained some possession after the halftime break, but Iona scored again on a controversial penalty call in the box against the Jaspers. Vassil Roussopolous put home the penalty kick.
Iona outshot Manhattan 16-10 on the day, with Jasper Christopher Todd coming up with four saves. Jasper junior goalkeeper Randall Brobson, who came on for Todd late in the match, had one save.
Manhattan's next match is Sunday, when it takes on Fairfield University at 1 p.m. at Fairfield.
