BUFFALO, N.Y. ? Buffalo-area native Kelly Regan (Williamsville, N.Y.) tallied 14 points and 14 rebounds for her second straight double-double, but the Manhattan College women's basketball team (6-12, 3-4 MAAC) couldn't overcome an early deficit in a 76-53 loss to Canisius (13-5, 5-2 MAAC) in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon.
“They're one of the best teams in the conference,” Head Coach Myndi Hill said. “It all starts with defense. They forced us into a lot of turnovers, and they were feeling it from downtown. Along with Marist, Canisius might be the best team in our league.”
Canisius stormed out of the gate, scoring the first 16 points of the game and never looking back. Manhattan finally got on the scoreboard when Regan hit a layup at the 13:00 mark, then trimmed the Griffs' lead to 10 points when a three-pointer by Alyssa Herrington (Cambridge, N.Y.) made it 19-9 with 8:27 remaining in the first half. Canisius responded with a 10-0 run to bring its lead back to 20 points and led 36-17 at halftime.
After Brittane Russell sank a trey to put Canisius up 42-19 early in the second half, the Lady Jaspers scored the next four points and cut their deficit to 19 points when a pair of Regan free throws made it 42-23 with 15:42 to go. Ellie Radke hit a three-pointer on the Griffs' next possession, and the margin was never lower than 20 points after that. The Canisius lead reached a game-high 30 points with five minutes remaining, but the Lady Jaspers ended the game on a 17-10 clip to make it a 76-53 final.
Regan's 14 points led the Lady Jaspers, and her 14 rebounds were a game-high. Herrington also scored 14 points while adding six rebounds and a team-high four assists. Kerri White (Flushing, N.Y.) finished with a career-high nine points, and Lindsey Loutsenhizer (North Huntingdon, Pa.) recorded seven points and five rebounds. The Lady Jaspers shot 30.2 percent (19-of-63) from the field, 29.6 percent (8-of-27) from three-point range, and 53.8 percent (7-of-13) at the free throw line.
Marie Warner registered her second double-double against Manhattan this season with a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds. She also recorded two steals. Stephanie MacDonald posted 14 points and Amanda Cavo added 11 points for the Griffs.
