RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? Manhattan suffered its first MAAC loss of the season at Draddy Gymnasium falling to Siena (12-5, 6-0 MAAC) 68-64 this afternoon. Jaspers' senior center Herve Banogle slightly missed a double-double, finishing with a career-high 14 rebounds and nine points. Chris Smith led Manhattan (9-7, 3-3 MAAC) with 14 points, while Siena's Edwin Ubiles recorded a game-high with 21.
The Jaspers trailed by as many as 13 points in the contest, but made a late rally to keep the game close. Manhattan used a 7-0 run to pull within three with 1:07 remaining.
Devon Austin fueled the surge when he drove baseline and threw down a two handed dunk at the 2:11 mark. On the Jaspers next possession, sophomore forward Andrew Gabriel converted a crafty lay-up to cut the deficit to 65-62.
Manhattan made it a two point ballgame with 18 seconds remaining courtesy of a pair of Darryl Crawford free-throws, but Ubiles answered with a pair of his own at the other end of the court to seal the victory.
Austin and Crawford were the other Jaspers to score in double-figures. They each finished with 13 points.
Kenny Hasbrouck contributed 17 points for Siena and Moore finished with 13. Erik Harris was the only reserve to score for the Saints.
Manhattan won the rebounding battle, 39-36. The Jaspers bench outscored Siena 18-5.
The Jaspers return to action on Friday when the squad plays host to Loyola. The contest will be televised nationally on ESPNU at 7 p.m.
