RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? Manhattan senior forward Fernando Londono continued his recent scoring surge, posting a pair of goals this evening to lead the Jaspers to a 2-1 victory over Army (0-4) at West Point. It marked Londono's fifth goal in the last two games. The win represented the 100th career collegiate victory of Manhattan head coach Michael Swanwick, and was the first in program history over the Black Knights.
Londono, a native of New Rochelle, N.Y., wasted little time as he put Manhattan (1-2) on the scoreboard in the eighth minute. Londono gathered a loose ball inside the box, and slipped it past Army goalkeeper John Michael Gallogly.
The stingy efforts of the Jaspers' defensive unit, which was anchored by goalkeeper Randall Brobson, propelled Manhattan into halftime with a 1-0 advantage. Brobson, a sophomore from Succasunna, N.J., made six saves in his first collegiate start.
In the 53rd minute, Londono connected on what proved to be the game winning goal. Freshman Michael Gallo had streaked down the right side and hit a nice cross. Fellow freshman Anthony Florez took a shot that was stopped by the Army keeper, but Londono slotted home the rebound to extend Manhattan's advantage to 2-0.
Army midfielder Patrick McVey recorded the Black Knights sole goal in the 65th minute when he found the net from 35 yards out.
"After a very disappointing loss to FDU just two days ago, this was a big rebouind situation for us," said Coach Swanwick who got his 100th collegiate win in his 13 years of coaching college soccer. "Unlike Monday, when we got a big lead and then lost, when Army came back to make the score 2-1 we dug in and made sure there would be no tying goal. I couldn't be more proud of this team's effort tonight at a place that is not easy to play out, West Point."
With the win, Manhattan snaps a 22 game winless streak against the Black Knights. It also stands as the Jaspers first road victory since 2004.
The Jaspers are back in action on Saturday for a home contest with New Jersey Institute of Technology. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Gaelic Park.
