WEST POINT, N.Y. ? Less than 18 hours after opening its season at Temple, the Manhattan College volleyball team was back in action on Saturday morning. In the second match of their season-opening six-match road trip, the Lady Jaspers fell to 0-2 on the young 2008 campaign with a 25-14, 25-14, 25-18 loss to Army (1-0) at Gillis Field House.
Manhattan scored the first point of the match, but Army quickly seized control of the first set. The Black Knights went on three different scoring runs of at least five points to build a 19-8 advantage. Manhattan was unable to pull within single digits the rest of the set, as Army cruised to a 25-14 win. The Black Knights hit .400 (12 kills, two errors, 25 attempts) in the set, while the Lady Jaspers hit .000 (9-9-29).
The second set was tight early on before Army went on a run midway through the set. Leading 8-5, the Black Knights went on a 12-3 spurt to pull in front, 20-8. The Lady Jaspers tried to come back, but Army hit an impressive .529 (11-2-17) in the set to post a 25-14 win and take a 2-0 edge in the match.
With the score tied at 3-3 in the third set, Army used a 3-0 run to pull in front for good. Manhattan kept it close, pulling within one several times, but the Lady Jaspers were unable to tie it again. The Black Knights used a 7-1 run to open up a 19-12 cushion and finished off a 25-18 win with consecutive kills by Jamie Clark.
Sherryta Stokes (Beltsville, Md.) and Andrea Reiff (Hawthorne, N.Y.) led the Lady Jaspers with seven kills apiece, while Jackie Kapovich (Downers Grove, Ill.) and Diane Strutner (San Jose, Calif.) each posted six kills. Strutner also recorded a team-high 10 digs. Alyssa Getzel (Richmond, Va.) dished out 19 assists, and freshman Bridget Call (Roberts, Wisc.) distributed four assists in her first collegiate action. As a team, the Lady Jaspers hit .160 (30-17-81) for the match.
Four Black Knights tallied at least six kills, led by Briana Stremick's nine on .500 hitting. Maureen Bannon led Army with six digs and added a team-high 16 assists. The Black Knights had nine service aces (compared to just one for Manhattan) and outblocked the Lady Jaspers 6-0. Army hit an impressive .412 for the match, smashing 40 kills and committing just seven errors in 80 swings.
The Lady Jaspers now have 10 days off before returning to action at Stony Brook for a 7 p.m. match on Sept. 9. The Seawolves (0-1) fell to Iona in their season opener on Friday.
