RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? Manhattan erased an early two run disadvantage, and rallied off six runs in the 13th inning to earn an 8-2 decision this afternoon at Marist (18-23, 7-11) in MAAC baseball action. Jaspers' starter Dan Forman and reliever Brian Pendergast combined for 17 strikeouts helping Manhattan (24-18-1, 13-5) to a three game sweep of the Red Foxes. Pendergast twirled five scoreless innings for his fourth win of the season.
Marist got on the scoreboard first posting its only two runs of the ballgame in the second and third innings. Outfielder Ryan Gauck and shortstop Richard Curylo were credited with the RBIs.
Red Foxes starter B.J. Martin went seven strong innings before allowing Manhattan's first run of the contest in the top of the eighth. Martin put Jaspers' outfielder Eric Nieto on base after hitting him with a pitch, which prompted a call to the Marist bullpen. Kevin Nieto took advantage of the pitching change as he laced a RBI single to bring Manhattan within 2-1.
Down to its last out in the ninth, Eric Nieto kept Manhattan's comeback hopes alive when he lined a double to left field to salvage the inning. Freshman outfielder Mark Onorati lifted the Jaspers in the next at bat with a double of his own to left center driving in the tying run.
Eric Nieto went 4-for-6 from the plate, and moved into a tie with Matt Rizzotti '07 for fifth place on the program's career hit list. Onorati was 2-for-5 with a run and RBI.
After three scoreless extra innings, the Jaspers erupted for six runs on four hits in the top of the 13th to take their first lead of the game, and seal the victory. Manhattan freshman Chad Salem and senior Dom Lombardi highlighted scoring surge. Salem blasted a three RBI double to left field, while Lombardi followed with a two run homer to cap off the inning.
Salem went 4-for-7 on the afternoon and scored a run. Lombardi's home run marked his second of the season, and ninth of his career.
