Riverdale, N.Y. (April 7, 2008) ? The Manhattan College Softball team dropped both games in their doubleheader with Canisius College today 5-0 and 2-1. Junior Devon Gustafson went 2-3 in the first game as Kristina Walraven did the same in the second game, while also driving in Manhattan's only run.
In the first game, Canisius struck first as they put up one run in the top of the first. Both defensives were standing tough, but not before Canisius added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Down, 4-0 the Lady Jaspers could not get their bats going as they would go on to fall to the Golden Griffs, 5-0 in the first game.
In the second game, freshman Erika Sullivan was pitching in her first game at Gaelic Park as she kept the defending MAAC Champions scorless for the first six innings. In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Jaspers went on the board as Kristina Walraven came up with a big two out single that scored pinch runner Lauren Mende to go up 1-0 going into the final inning of play.
But in the top of the seventh, Sullivan's scoreless streak ended as Canisius scraped up two runs to take a 2-1 with Manhattan having three outs to mount a comeback. But the Lady Jaspers could not come through, as they fell 2-1 in the final innings.
Walraven finisihed the day 3-6, with one RBI and a walk. Jaclyn Churilla came through with a big pinch hit walk in the second game and finished 1-3 on the day.
The Lady Jaspers will return to action tomorrow, Tuesday, April 8 where they will travel to take on Monmouth University in a non-conference match-up. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
