RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? The Manhattan College baseball team fell to UAlbany (9-24-1), 9-4, this afternoon at Varsity Field in upstate New York. The Jaspers' carried a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth, before the Great Danes scored in each of its final four at bats cruising to a five run decision. Jaspers' senior Dom Lombardi was a bright spot as he finished 2-for-4 in the contest and drove in two RBIs.
Lombardi blasted his third triple of the season, and sixth of his career in the top of the second inning to spark Manhattan's (14-15-1) offense. Freshman Austin Sheffield got Lombardi to home plate two batters later with a sacrifice fly to right field. The score evened the ball game at 1-1.
The Jaspers' earned 2-1 advantage in the fifth inning when Kevin Nieto managed a RBI single through the left side sending his brother Eric Nieto across the plate. The hit extended his consecutive game streak to 14 games.
Manhattan's one run edge wouldn't last long as the Great Danes posted the equalizer in the bottom half of the fifth, and then erupted for seven runs over the next three innings. Great Danes' second baseman Kyle Crean was 1-for-3 on the afternoon, including a home run. He drove in three RBIs and scored two runs.
UAlbany reliever Matthew Herrick was credited with the win after throwing one inning of shutout ball, and striking out two. Manhattan starter Zac Goyer was served his second loss of the season. He went five and a third innings, allowed just four hits, and four earned runs.
Manhattan returns to action tomorrow afternoon for its non-conference match with Sacred Heart. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m. in Bridgeport, Conn.
