RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? The Manhattan men's soccer team took Niagara (11-4-3, 5-2-1 MAAC) to the 110th minute, resulting in a scoreless tie before a rowdy crowd this evening at Gaelic Park. Manhattan (3-13-2, 1-5-2 MAAC) outshot the Purple Eagles 22-16, and nearly missed several scoring opportunities in overtime. Jaspers' goalkeeper John Ciano posted six saves and recorded his first shutout of the season.
The squads played an even first half which proved to be a defensive stalemate. Joshua Renner, Christopher Holihan, Kyle Lauchmen and Sean Morin anchored the Jaspers' defensive unit which contained senior forward Matthew Durand, the MAAC's second leading goal scorer.
The Jaspers best scoring chance came in the 83rd minute when Fernando Londono beat his defender on the left side and served an arching pass into the box for Anthony Florez. Florez handled the ball on the run and forced an open look high above the crossbar.
Manhattan overloaded the Purple Eagles with six shots in overtime. Niagara goalkeeper John Fiutowski came up with two diving stops in the second session to preserve his fifth shutout of the season. Fiutowski made seven saves.
Manhattan returns to Gaelic Park on Sunday morning for its regular-season finale versus Canisius. Game time is set for 10 a.m. Prior to the game, the Manhattan Athletics department will honor the men's soccer senior class.
