Hofstra Upends Manhattan; Devon Austin Scores 1,000th Career Point

Box Score

RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? Hofstra guard Charles Jenkins scored 21 of his game-high 23 points in the second half leading the Pride to a 65-61 win over Manhattan (3-2) this evening at Draddy Gymnasium. Jaspers senior forward Devon Austin became the 29th player in program history to score his 1,000th career point. Junior teammate Brandon Adams recorded career-highs in scoring (10) and rebounding (12) for his second double-double.

“It turned out to be another game where we had some struggles getting the ball in the basket,” said third year head coach Barry Rohrssen. “When you look at the defensive side of the court, we did a much better job in the first half executing.”

Manhattan carried a 33-27 advantage into the first half. The Jaspers went on a 15-4 run just before intermission which was book-ended by Chris Smith 3-pointers. Jasper forward Andrew Gabriel (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) gave Manhattan a lift during the run with three consecutive unanswered buckets.

Smith led Manhattan with 15 points and Gabriel contributed seven.

At the 16:04 mark in the second half, Austin knocked down a free-throw to complete a three point play and register his 1,000-point. He is the first Jasper to reach this milestone since Arturo Dubois did on Jan. 24, 2007.

The Pride rallied to take a 50-49 advantage with 8:14 remaining on a Jenkins jumper and would not trail again. Hofstra built its lead to seven three times, marking its largest of the game.

With 2:54 on the clock, Manhattan began a late surge facing a 61-54 deficit. Smith and Antoine Pearson drained back-to-back 3-pointers, and then Darryl Crawford evened the game at 61-61 on a free-throw with 1:36 remaining.

Jenkins responded with at jumper 17 seconds later, and tagged on three more points to close out the game.

Manhattan outrebounded the Pride 41-39. The Jaspers shot 33.9% (19-56) and Hofstra (4-1) was 44.8% (26-58) from the field.

The Jaspers open their MAAC slate on Friday evening versus Canisius in Riverdale. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. following the Manhattan women's contest with Loyola.
