BOX SCORE
Riverdale, N.Y. ? A late game comeback fell just short as the Manhattan College men's soccer team was edged by Saint Peter's 2-1 Saturday afternoon on a windy, raw day in Jersey City, N.J.
With a little more than 10 minutes to go in the contest, Manhattan senior center back Kyle Lauchmen placed a header over the Saint Peter's goalkeeper to cut a 2-0 lead in half.
Saint Peter's had scored early in the contest, when Gamal Breedy took a feed in the 10th minute from Rumen Kerkov off a pass from Braulio Constantino and slid an eight-yard shot to put the Peacocks up 1-0.
The go-ahead goal came a few minutes after Manhattan junior midfielder Nicholas Patrikis cracked a bullet shot from 18 yards out that was tipped away on a great save by Peacock goalkeeper Matthew Lawlor.
After both teams played the rest of first half evenly, they came out even, too, in the second half. Manhattan had a great chance to tie the game up in about the 75th minute when sophomore striker Matthew Gormley had a shot from 15 yards clang off the crossbar. Then, minutes later, Saint Peter's Dmitri Pelts found himself wide open off a free kick from Chris DeAbreu to put the Peacocks ahead 2-0 in the 77th minute.
Lauchmen's header in the 80th minute brought the Jaspers back to 2-1, but a late game offensive surge by Manhattan was held off by Saint Peter's.
Jasper sophomore goalkeeper Randall Brobson had six saves on the day for Manhattan, whose record now stands at 2-12-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the MAAC. Saint Peter's is now 7-6-2 overall and 3-2 in the MAAC.
Manhattan now heads to Rider Friday for a 3 p.m. contest before heading to Baltimore Sunday to take on nationally-ranked Loyola College of Maryland.
