POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. ? Two weeks ago at Draddy Gym, the Manhattan College volleyball team put together one of its best efforts of the season in a 3-0 sweep of Marist.  In the rematch at the on Saturday afternoon, it looked for a while like the Lady Jaspers (5-13, 4-5 MAAC) would dominate the Red Foxes once again.  However, Marist (9-13, 4-5 MAAC) won all the big points in the second and third sets, then rolled in the fourth, as the Red Foxes posted a 21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-16 victory at the McCann Center.

 

After Manhattan scored the first point of the match, Marist went on a 6-0 run that included two service aces from Cassie Campbell to take the lead.  The Lady Jaspers slowly chipped away, cutting their deficit to one, 12-11, on a Sherryta Stokes (Beltsville, Md.) ace before Marist scored the next point.  Jaci Rahey (West Milford, N.J.) followed with three consecutive kills to give the Lady Jaspers the lead, 14-13.  The score was tied at 14-14, 15-15 and 17-17 before Manhattan went on a 7-1 run to set up six set point opportunities.  Trailing 24-18, Marist rallied for three straight points before a Stokes kill put away the set for the Lady Jaspers, 25-21.

 

The sides traded runs to open the second set.  Manhattan scored the first two points, then Marist opened up a 3-2 lead before the Lady Jaspers rallied to go back in front, 7-3.  Manhattan maintained that lead until a 7-1 Marist run reduced the Lady Jaspers' 17-11 advantage to a 19-18 edge.  A kill by Rahey off the Marist block put Manhattan in front 20-19, but the Red Foxes responded with a four-point run to take a 23-20 lead.  Marist held on to take the set, 25-21, and even the match at 1-1.

 

The third set was the most even of the match, as there were nine ties and five lead changes in the set.  After trading the first eight points of the set, Manhattan opened up the first two-point lead at 6-4.  Marist came back to take a 7-6 lead, but the Lady Jaspers responded with a 5-1 rally to go in front 11-8.  From there, Marist took over.  The Red Foxes went on a 4-0 run to take a 12-11 lead, then used a 6-0 rally to increase their advantage to 21-14.  The Lady Jaspers pulled within 23-19, but Marist took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-20 set win.

 

Marist took an early 8-5 lead in the fourth set before Manhattan went on a 6-2 run to pull ahead 11-10.  The Red Foxes scored the next three points to go back in front, 13-11, then increased their lead to 15-12.  A kill by Rita Welsh (Collegeville, Pa.) pulled the Lady Jaspers within 18-16 before Marist scored the final seven points of the match to finish off a 25-16 win that gave the Red Foxes a 3-1 match victory.

 

Rahey smashed a season-high 12 kills, while Stokes tallied a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs.  Welsh had seven kills and added six blocks.  Alyssa Getzel (Richmond, Va.) handed out 31 assists and Diane Strutner (San Jose, Calif.) registered a team-high 18 digs.  As a team, Manhattan hit .115 (41 kills, 24 errors, 148 attacks) for the match.

 

Joanna Foss slammed a match-high 16 kills and added 10 digs for the Red Foxes.  Lindsey Schmid had 15 kills and hit .345 and Alexandra Schultze tallied 11 kills.  Kelsey Schaefer finished one kill shy of a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs, while Dawn Jan distributed 41 assists.  Campbell recorded a match-high 23 digs for the Red Foxes, who out-dug the Lady Jaspers 65-54.  Marist hit .169 (55-30-148) as a team.

 

Saturday's match concluded the Lady Jaspers' five-match road trip.  Manhattan returns home on Sunday for a 2 p.m. matchup with three-time defending MAAC champion Siena.  The Saints (7-2, 9-10 MAAC), who defeated the Lady Jaspers 3-0 on Sept. 28, knocked off Iona in four sets on Saturday.
