RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? Gaels' forward Giovanni Destasio scored his seventh goal of the season in the seventh minute, leading Iona (8-2-1, 2-0-0 MAAC) to a 3-0 victory over the Manhattan men's soccer team (2-10-1, 0-2-1 MAAC) this evening at Gaelic Park. Senior midfielder Taurean Manders and freshman Adam Rohan also scored, marking their first goals of the season.
The Gaels jumped out to a two goal advantage less than 13 minutes into the contest. In the seventh minute, Midfielder Mario Rios blitzed down the right side line sparking a fast break opportunity. He sent a cross into the middle of the field, finding Destasio who placed a shot in the back of the net. Then with 12:09 on the clock, Taurean Manders blasted a rocket in the top left corner to extend the lead.
Iona carried a 2-0 advantage into halftime.
In the 49th minute, Adam Rohan joined in the scoring action. The Gaels were awarded a free kick from just outside the box, resulting from a Manhattan foul. Fernando Liserra sent an arching service into the box, directly towards Rohan who put a header past Jaspers goalkeeper Randall Brobson.
Brobson recorded a game-high six saves over 90 minutes of work. His counterpart Nils Binstock earned the shutout and finished with three saves.
The Jaspers best scoring chance came in the 69th minute when junior forward Stephen Van Rossem fired a shot just above the crossbar. Joshua Renner created the play as he charged up the right sideline, and chipped a pass over the defense which created the one-on-one opportunity.
The Gaels outshot Manhattan 15-10 on the evening.
Manhattan completes its two game home stand on Sunday morning when it plays host to Fairfield. Kick off is set for 10 a.m. at Gaelic Park.
