Riverdale, N.Y. ? Manhattan dropped its second MAAC game this weekend to Niagara University, 3-1. Senior Ashley Watson anchored the Manhattan defense with 28 digs.
The Lady J's were looking to improve on their MAAC regular season record as they took on Niagara University today. In the first game, Manhattan kept it close and the game was tied 9-9 early in the game. Niagara soon took a slight lead and held on to take the first game 30-24. In the second game, the Lady Jaspers found themselves in an early deficit, 11-5. But Manhattan fought back and soon the game was tied at 16. The game was kept close, but Niagara pulled away to win 30-24 and take a 2-0 lead in the match. With the Lady J's facing a loss, they again found themselves in a hole down by 5 early in the game. But Manhattan would not go quietly as they battled back to tie the game at 19. Soon after, the Lady Jaspers took the lead and held on to win 30-27 and now were only trailing 2-1 in the match. The fourth game was a back and forth battle, as there was six lead changes throughout the game. Niagara came out on top in the end to win the game 30-25 and the match 3-1.
Senior Ashley Watson was tied for a game high 28 digs for Manhattan. Sophomore Rita Welsh led all Lady Jaspers with 15 kills and hit .364 for the day. Junior Jackie Kapovich contributed 13 kills and hit .257 for the Lady J's.
Manhattan will get back in action on Wednesday when the Lady Jaspers travel to take on Sacred Heart University at 7:00 PM.
