Stony Brook, N.Y. (September 26, 2007)- Manhattan and Stony Brook combined for 22 shots on frame, but neither team cracked the scoreboard as the Lady Jaspers and Seawolves played to a 0-0 draw tonight at LaValle Stadium.
Both Manhattan's Alicia DeFino and Stony Brook's Marisa Viola tallied 11 saves and each made several game-saving stops at the end of regulation and in overtime.
The Lady Jaspers had a prime chance to score in the 87th minute on a blast by Courtney McMahon shot from six yards out, but Viola thwarted the attempt. Viola again turned aside a McMahon shot in the final seconds of the first overtime, stopping a point blank shot.
DeFino showed her net minding acumen in the 83rd minute, saving a shot from the left side of the 18-yard box just inside the left post.
McMahon tallied six shots on goal to pace both offenses.
“This is a fair result,” stated head coach Sean Driscoll. “This game marks our second consecutive shutout, this time against a regionally ranked team (Stony Brook is ranked #13 in the Northeast by SoccerBuzz.com), and extends our scoreless minutes streak to more than 230 minutes, which is a credit to Alicia DeFino and our defensive effort. I was pleased with our enthusiasm and play in the second half and both overtimes tonight. We played a good, well organized team even for 110 minutes.”
The Lady Jaspers get back in action on Friday, September 28, hosting the College of the Holy Cross in the first intercollegiate night game at the newly refurbished Gaelic Park. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
