Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (April 21, 2007)? The Marist defense and its goalie Ryan Penner kept the Jasper attack in check down the stretch as Manhattan Men's Lacrosse came up short on Saturday afternoon at Leonidoff Field. Penner made nine of his 15 saves in the second half to stifle the Jaspers' attempt at coming back in the 9-6 defeat.
Senior attackman Jeremy Marrano opened the game's scoring only 15 seconds into the contest as he beat Penner off of a pass from junior Shawn Gorinson.
Marrano also scored the first goal of the second quarter, his 16th of the season, but the Red Foxes tallies six of the first half's final eight goals to take a 6-3 lead into the break.
With the Jaspers trailing 7-3 after Marist's Paul Santavicca opened the second half scoring, rookie Luke Dilillo put his ninth goal of the season past Penner to cut the Manhattan deficit to three with 7:18 remaining in the third quarter.
Marist answered Dilillo's score with two straight goals compliments of Mike McGuire and Pete O'Hara, extending the lead to 9-4 with 6:27 left in regulation.
The Jaspers closed the gap with two goals in the final five minutes as Manhattan's leading scorer Brian Murray registered his first two points of the afternoon. Murray assisted on sophomore Marc LaBelle's goal with 4:07 remaining as well as Ryan's second goal of the day, which came at the 3:25 mark.
Now 3-3 in MAAC play, Manhattan is slated to close out its regular season schedule at home this week. Defending MAAC Champion Providence College will visit the Jaspers on Wednesday, April 25, and Canisius College will come to town on Senior Day, April 28.
